3 days until the Blu-Ray release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and today we will be discussing why the Ultimate Edition of Batman V Superman was rated R.
1. This is not the theatrical edition.
This is the Ultimate Edition, which means WB doesn't exactly care too much what rating it gets, since it isn't the version the general audience will pay tickets for.
2. Batman Sequence
The warehouse sequence in Batman V Superman was where things went over the edge. When Batman flings a crate at a thug, one dodges it, but the other is not so fortunate. In the theatrical cut, the thug lies in a position with no blood apparent. In the ultimate edition, the thug is in the same position, but there is a smear or stain of blood on the wall directly above the thug, and we can only presume, having the crate slung into him, would have had this stain on the wall.
Honestly, the rating for the UE, looks to be dumbfounding. If a smear of blood on a wall can push a movie to an R rating, I hate to see what MPAA does next. Even Superman had blood, when Batman cut a cut with the Kryptonite spear. These are some of the ratings, MPAA has known to make, the absolutely ridiculous ratings, this happened with the Battle of the Five Armies extended edition too. Now because of this rating, the sales for home video aren't going to be as high as WB hopes.
