Leta Lestrange is a character in the first Fantastic Beasts film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in which many theories and speculation popped up on the vast internet. While Yates' confirmation of the character appearing in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is helpful, we still don't have any real hints at what might expect from her character. But with new theories on the horizon, it's time to speculate and theorize on what the mysterious character's backstory is.

According to multiple theories, Leta Lestrange and Newt Scamander share much in common. They both love magical creatures and never really fitted in school. It is unknown if they were both in the same house, but I assume they were both in Hufflepuff. Their "close relationship" spanned eight years and Leta was considered "a taker" by Queenie when she drank the entire story out of his mind. Apparently, Leta Lestrange was the reason Newt was expelled. She was running experiments which lead to chaos, and Newt took the blame and was expelled. No surprise that he feels bitter about the incident and Dumbledore tried to support him. Apparently, Newt still loves her, even through the incident.
