Carl and James returned to their classroom, where their teacher Mr. Veeder awaited them. His classroom was a substantially large one being one of the biggest in the school. There were polished oak wood shelves of even placed books lined across the left walls. Across the right walls, there were several color-coded boxes stuffed with math games. There was a birch wood closet, in the back of the room, full of school supplies ranging from glue sticks to stacks of scratch paper. As a collective whole, the room was very bright and colorful and was one of those rooms in which you would expect to feel child-like fun. Mr. Veeder was a very enthusiastic teacher which coincides well with his bright and fun room. His best subject to teach was, by far, mathematics but he was strong in other subjects as well.

“Hello class, welcome back from lunch.” He said as the class began pouring into the classroom, each student taking their seat. When Carl, the last one to enter the room, entered, Mr. Veeder stood up and went to close the door. “Take out your writing notebooks. You know what time it is.” The entire class groaned loudly. Their writing assignment today was called W.S.R. (Write, Share, Rank), a school tradition as Mr. Veeder had called it. First, the entire class would free-write about anything they wanted, then they would have to share it, and finally the class would rank the writings and choose which one to be nominated to be entered in that year’s writing fair, which was held at their school annually. While, initially, it seems like an enjoyable competition but it quickly goes in the drain for most.
